150 Years Institute of International Law

Abstract

This year the Institute of International Law celebrated its 150th anniversary during its 81st session of Angers from 27 August until 2 September 2023. In 1904 the Institute of International Law was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its action in favour of arbitration among States, a peaceful means of settling disputes.

This year the Institute of International Law celebrated its 150th anniversary during its 81st session of Angers from 27 August until 2 September 2023. Founded in Ghent in 1873, the Institute is constantly evolving, while guided by the principles as expressed in its motto: Justitia et Pace

In commemoration of its anniversary, the Institute launched:

  • a book on the Institute’s history and work:150 Years of Contributing to the Development of International Law – Justitia et Pace (1873-2023). For information about the book, click here.

The oldest organization in its field, its publications and resolutions constitute an indispensable reference for research and practice in international law. Its members, coming from over 60 countries, are among the most eminent specialists in public and private international law.
